Brilliant Book!Review by LYDIA

I can highly recommend Resilient. Set out in short chapters it makes an ideal daily devotional, focusing in on the very words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
I think this will be a great book to read but also to give away to friends, whether Christian or not, or to read along with others possibly in a book group or home/cell/life group situation. The point is whether we're sailing through life right now or battling hard times and disappointments we need to take seriously the words of Jesus and encourage ourselves and one another in them. A TOUCH FROM OUR KINGReview by Jill
Quality
This book is written with you in mind. It is personal and invitational, with a great depth of wisdom and understanding. It brings hope and light to you, regardless of who you are, who others think you are, or who you think you are.
I bathed in the first chapters for a long time, not wanting to leave them. This is not a book to be rushed. As you read it, allow time for God to speak to you. I am convinced he will.
I was forever flipping back to the pages where God spoke to me the loudest. I soaked in his presence and read portions out loud - to help seal them in my heart.
This book is so rich in love a grace. A touch from our King.

A great resource for those challenging seasons of lifeReview by Steph

“We don’t develop resilience only by hearing or reading about it.
We develop resilience through action.”
Sheridan Voysey, from the chapter entitled: From Words to Deeds

I found Sheridan Voysey’s book “Resilient” arrived among my study resources at just the right time for me. It has been while living through a challenging season in my personal life that God has been using Resilient to deepen the resilience I hadn’t realised I had… or needed!

The short devotional chapters are easy to read and easy to focus on without feeling overwhelmed, which is particularly helpful for anyone who is currently going through a tough season and just needs a moment to hear God’s voice.

Sheridan’s style of weaving story-telling with revelation and insight makes this is really easy book to read, and I know at some point, when this season has past, I will be reading it again for a more in-depth study into the challenge of Jesus’ sermon on the Mount. Especially as at the end of each chapter, Sheridan has written a couple of questions to help us apply the word of God into our daily lives. I can see that this would also be valuable material for small group study.

Scripture Made Accessible for Today's SeekerReview by Christina Hubbard
Quality
The best words a writer can write are ones born from a place of need to understand how can live this one life well. Sheridan does this in Resilient. I found this devotional both accessible and powerful in the insights drawn from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This is a well-known Bible passage many Christians (like me) have taken for granted.

Resilient took me through God’s invitation to come to Him in whatever condition my life is in. It reminded me that God’s heart is for the hurting and needy and mine should be too.

The short, easily digestible chapters cover both the hard and the comforting words of Jesus with honesty and depth. Sheridan covers God's invitation, calling, relationship, and practices to live a life that springs back after struggle.

Resilient provides ways to not just read the gospel deliberately but much more: a challenge to take Jesus at His very word and live it out with purpose. (Posted on 10/21/2015)
Stretch yourself .......Review by Andrew

What ever your beliefs in life, this book will take you further, and will challenge your thinking. You will gain a new perspective on life. History proves that Jesus of Nazareth walked this earth, and whatever status we give him, we know he spoke words of power - and I am thankful that some can "interpret" his words into our culture, relevant for 2015, better than I can. I appreciate good books, like this one, to expand His teachings into my life. I often think that radio and TV interviewers (like Sheridan) have some common ground with Counsellors (of which I am one) in that they ask probing questions that help us go a little bit further into ourselves, and break out something that we were not fully aware of yet. This book does just that - like an interviewer, like a counsellor - some challenging digs, that for if we are ready, we will benefit. Love is the law behind laws, as Sheridan reminds us. Buy this book in multiple copies - for yourself and those close to you........... (Posted on 10/20/2015)
A Magic Eye book for the soulReview by Amy
Quality
‘Resilient’ is a book of short devotionals, but don’t let that fool you: rather than being self-contained pockets of thought, these short sections go on a journey and build up a picture of a Jesus-shaped life in today’s world.
And because it’s Sheridan Voysey writing it - erstwhile radio show host, popular podcaster and speaker, thought-for-the-day contributor - the book is also an invitation to an ongoing conversation on what the Sermon on the Mount is really saying about life in the 21st century, and it pops with ideas. I wasn’t far into the book before realising that I was going to need to make sure that I had a Bible, my journal and Google to hand to keep up with the constant fascinating references, quotations, personalities and anecdotes that Sheridan uses to bring light and shade to those familiar words of Christ so that they stand out in unexpected 3D, like a Magic Eye book for the soul.
And of course, being Sheridan, it won’t stop there - there is to be a guide, and videos, and more discussion so that Resilient can become an important resource for homegroups and churches too. I'm really glad that I joined the conversation.

A great exploration of a world-changing sermonReview by PC
Quality
Straight away it’s worth noting this is not a Christian “self-help” book. Speaking from the experience of his own wounds Sheridan doesn’t pretend that trials and troubles won’t come, that the storms of life will rage. What his writing offers, however, is an insight into how Jesus’ famous words can be applied to our daily lives, can permeate our souls and help the Holy Spirit bring us healing, purpose & a desire to seek out the life we were created to live.

Dividing the message of the Sermon into six sections, Sheridan explores:
“Your Invitation” – Jesus request for us to ‘come’;
“Your Calling” – what Jesus has called us to be and do;
“Your Relationships” – Jesus sanctification of each part of human relations, seeking to make each thing ‘Holy’;
“Your Practices” – Jesus guidance on the Way to live out His purpose for our lives;
“Your Choices” – Jesus guidance, instruction and warnings across the decisions we make, big and small, in our daily lives;
“Your Resilient Life” – guidance for moving Jesus message from our head to our hearts and living out a life shaped by Him no matter what is thrown at us.

Along the way there are questions to ponder, allowing the reader to focus their thoughts on what has been said. Each section concludes with a strong summary which directs us back to Jesus’ desire to help us build the resilience that will see us through the trials of being His disciples, His friends, His people.

Throughout the book Sheridan’s writing is smooth and at times poetic, giving memorable quotes and images, all adding to the impression of exploring the text in the company of a warm, learned friend. He draws on stories, anecdotes and a rich variety of Biblical images to draw us deeper into the Sermon – not only on a personal level, but as a means of showing how Jesus words run like a life-giving stream throughout eternity, consistent with the heart God displays for His people across all of Scripture.

For me this is perhaps the most impressive aspect of the book. Sheridan has carefully avoided the whole thing becoming a long exercise in Jesus-speak naval gazing. Underpinning the whole narrative is a sense that through aligning ourselves to Jesus will for our lives we can have a hugely positive impact on those around us, both friends and strangers alike. Our God is a missional God – He did not send Jesus simply to save the people of Israel, but to give His life for the whole world. Time and again Sheridan encourages us to explore how reimagining our goals, ambitions and values in the light of the Sermon on the Mount can help us show Jesus’ love to those around us.

Overall this is a great resource for Christian people looking to deepen their relationship with Jesus and would work well in small group setting, as a personal resource, or as a way to help Jesus begin bringing encouragement and healing to people facing times of sorrow or hardship.

Highly recommended.

Resilient is indeed an invitation: it is one that draws you gently into territory that may be new and unfamiliar, but Sheridan’s wisdom and individual voice shines through to reassure and welcome the reader. This book is beautifully crafted and gives a new take on faith that is interesting and challenging in equal measure. The book feels like an exploration that once started, calls you back time after time to examine it further. Highly recommended. I would add that I received my copy of the book within 48 hours of ordering it, which is excellent service from Discovery House. (Posted on 10/20/2015)
The newest and freshest devotional around!!Review by Jane
Quality
This book is a great devotional based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. It is split up into 90 "chapters" or devotionals, each starting with a scripture verse, then followed by Sheridan's commentary, and finishes up with a couple of questions to get you thinking and digging deeper into the Word.

Sheridan's style of writing makes this book easy to read, whilst providing great insight and food for thought. You can read it straight through like a book, but I feel you'll get more out of it by reading it as a devotional and taking some time to ponder on each chapter.

Well written, easy to read and a great take on the Sermon on the Mount. Buy the book and start reading. I'm sure you won't be sorry you did. (Posted on 10/20/2015)

Resilient-your invitation to a Jesus-shaped life is one of those devotional books that you actually can't put down and end up reading continuously within one sitting. Every ‘chapter' pulls you in and either has you raising your hand in agreement or finally making sense of what you've been feeling/thinking and reading in the past.

Based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount; Resilient takes you on a journey of 90 readings with stories, scripture, insights from the sermon and life pondering questions.

To bounce back from emotional, physical & spiritual storms we need resilience and quoting the book; ‘the blessed life is a resilient life, at its core is a heart for God'.

Personally battling inner turmoil with grief and faith struggles for the past few years this book has repaired my relationship with God, finally hearing his voice again and knowing he'll use my strengths, seek my talents, let my light shine and shape my future into that blessed resilient life. It's really opened my eyes and heart to all aspects of my life and made me listen to that voice (God's) that perhaps I'd stopped hearing as my own inner voices became too loud.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly for anyone struggling, anyone starting their voyage with God, devotional readers or just anyone who wants to be spiritually nourished. It is beautifully written; Sheridan uses his own life experiences, humour and knowledge to take you on a flowing journey of self discovery. An emotional rollercoaster of a ride that will lead you to resilience and a stronger relationship with God.

Well written, easily accessible book.Review by Madz

Resilient is a great book that will make you open your eyes to Jesus' sermon on the mount. No matter how many times you may have read this sermon, this book will certainly give you something to think about and reach deep into your heart. It's a great tool for a daily devotional as the chapters are just a couple of pages long with a couple of questions and it would work just as well if you wanted to study the sermon in a small group, especially with the questions as they'd make great talking points.
Sheridan has done it again, my life wasn't the same after reading Resurrection Year and it won't be the same now, after resilient! (Posted on 10/20/2015)
