The Gift
Today’s Reading: Matthew 7:7–11

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
(v. 11 NIV)

Many of us have a childhood memory of receiving the gift of our dreams on Christmas Day. Do you remember having your heart set on a certain toy or game? The moment you tore through the paper and saw the gift, your excitement was uncontainable.

As adults, many of us have had the opportunity to give the gift to a child in our lives. Somehow, being the giver is just as exciting as being the receiver. The same feeling of excitement floods our hearts as we watch their little fingers tear through the Christmas paper. There is something deeply gratifying about giving good things to the children in our lives. We experience joy through lavishing joy on the little ones we love.

Jesus said that if we, as sinful beings, know how to give good gifts to our children, God the Father is able to give us abundantly better gifts. How humbling to realize our heavenly Father rejoices in giving us good things!

The Christmas season is the perfect time to reflect upon the gifts of God. As we anticipate Christmas day, we can thank God for all the good things He has given us throughout the year. And when Christmas morning dawns, we can wake with the wide eyes of a child, remembering that God’s Son is the gift we’ve been longing for.
